Car Window Shatter Tool with Handle: The HawkHook – A Pocket-Sized Review

Emergency situations can arise unexpectedly, and being prepared is crucial, especially when you’re on the road. A car accident or even a submerged vehicle can quickly turn life-threatening, making a swift escape essential. That’s where a reliable car window shatter tool with a handle becomes invaluable. In this review, we delve into the HawkHook, a pocket-sized tool designed with this exact purpose in mind, born from practical experience and a need for an affordable solution.

The HawkHook’s origin story is rooted in real-world problem-solving. Developed by a designer with a background at BlackHawk, the tool emerged from a desire to create a more accessible and safer alternative to expensive fixed carbide glass breakers. The initial concept sparked from observing hammer-style glass breakers commonly found in buses and trains – tools known for their effective power delivery and enhanced safety. The goal was clear: to combine this hammer-like force into a compact, everyday carry tool using readily available materials.

To validate the concept, a prototype was crafted from O-1 steel and heat-treated with a propane torch. A practical test at a local auto salvage yard, breaking numerous car windows for a flat fee, confirmed the viability of using standard blade steel for this purpose. This hands-on experience paved the way for the folding HawkHook design. The tool’s glass breaker is ingeniously simple: a pyramid-shaped point integrated into the AUS-8 blade’s edge. Deployment is straightforward – open the blade, grip the handle securely, and swing to shatter the glass. The effectiveness of this design is demonstrated in various window-breaking scenarios in this video.

It’s worth noting that the video primarily showcases the breaking of rear quarter panel windows. This was due to budget constraints during the testing phase, as door windows were significantly more expensive at the salvage yard. However, the core functionality and the tool’s ability to shatter tempered glass are clearly demonstrated.

Beyond its primary function as a car window breaker, the HawkHook is designed as a versatile multi-tool. It cleverly doubles as a money clip and incorporates several practical features: a flat-blade screwdriver, a hook-style seat belt cutter (with a serrated backup edge), and a wire stripper. This multifunctionality enhances its everyday carry appeal, ensuring it’s readily available not just for emergencies, but for various daily tasks. The HawkHook offers peace of mind, providing a workable glass breaker that can be carried in your pocket at all times, without the bulk of dedicated emergency hammers. And perhaps most importantly, it achieves this functionality at an affordable price point, making vehicle safety accessible to a wider audience. While its future availability depends on BlackHawk’s production, the HawkHook currently stands as a practical and budget-friendly option for anyone looking to enhance their vehicle emergency preparedness.
