PaintTool SAI is a popular and versatile painting software favored by digital artists for its user-friendly interface and powerful tools. Before you begin creating stunning digital artwork, understanding the download and installation process is key. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get PaintTool SAI up and running on your Windows system.

Understanding PaintTool SAI and Basic Requirements

PaintTool SAI is designed for Windows operating systems and requires users to have a basic understanding of Windows operations. This includes:

  • File Downloading: Familiarity with downloading files from web browsers.
  • File and Folder Management: Basic knowledge of managing files and folders within Windows Explorer.
  • Windows Application Operations: Understanding how to install and run Windows applications.

If you are new to Windows, it’s recommended to familiarize yourself with these basic operations before proceeding with the PaintTool SAI installation. Please note that support for basic Windows operations is not provided by the software developers.

Downloading PaintTool SAI: Full Installation and Updates

PaintTool SAI offers both a full installation package for new users and update files for existing users. Choose the option that best suits your needs:

Simply download the installer and run the executable file. The initial setup process will take a few minutes, but subsequent launches will be much faster.

Update Installation

If you are updating from a previous version of PaintTool SAI, you can use the update files only package.

To use the update installer, overwrite all extracted files into your existing PaintTool SAI application folder.

Important Installation Notes

Keep these crucial points in mind during the installation process:

  • Installation Location: On Windows Vista or later, it is strongly advised not to install PaintTool SAI in the “Program Files” folder. Due to User Account Control (UAC) restrictions, SAI may not function correctly in this location. The default installation path is “C:PaintToolSAI”, which is recommended.

  • High DPI Monitors: PaintTool SAI Version 1 is not designed to support high DPI monitors. Windows 10 will not automatically apply DPI scaling to this version. If you are using a high DPI monitor, you may need to lower your screen resolution to 1920×1200 or less for optimal display.

  • N-trig Pen Tablets: If you are using a pen tablet that utilizes N-trig drivers (such as Microsoft Surface devices), the default settings of PaintTool SAI may not be compatible. To potentially resolve this, you can modify the “misc.ini” file located in your PaintTool SAI program folder. Change the value of “TabletMouseSimulation” from 0 to 1. This adjustment may enable proper functionality with N-trig pen tablets.

By following these steps and notes, you should be able to successfully download and install PaintTool SAI and begin your digital art journey. Remember to always download software from trusted sources to ensure safety and avoid potential issues.
